My wife Karen and I were in Paris 1988 and were on our way to the Musée D’Orsay when we passed the Palais de Legion D’Honor where there was a mason on a scaffolding re-sculpting a cement bas relief with a trowel. A cigarette dangling from his mouth, he was doing such beautiful work with the most casual physical attitude. I made a mental picture of this scene and created the sculpture when we returned to New York.
