Maria Montoya Martinez a Native American of the San Ildefonso Pueblo explored the traditional pottery techniques of her community that were being lost. Early on she collaborated with he husband Julian. Continuing in their tradition the women would hand build the pots and the men would decorate them. Many of these collaborative pieces were signed Marie/Julian. When Julian died she decided to carry on doing both aspects of the creation. Her prized works particularly the black on black pieces have become Internationally known.
