This commission for a private collector in Cincinnati was created to feature the diversity of the musical interests of the renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma. Besides being one of the most well known classical instrumentalists he has crossed over to play in almost every realm of the musical lexicon.
One of the aspects of his work that I most admire is the Silk Road Project.
This project now known as the Silkroad Ensemble promotes musical collaboration amongst multinational artists all along the traditional silk road which links Xi’an in the East to the Mediterranean in the West, thus linking China to the Roman Empire.
Yo Yo Ma’s philosophy is to stretch his musical diversity beyond what he knows.
